United
Nations Plaza |
East 46th St. at First Ave.
Built atop ground once occupied by
slaughterhouses, the United Nations Plaza is international territory. Though San
Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia were all contenders when the site was planned back in
1944, its first Secretary General, Trygve Lie, preferred New York. The U.N. has it's own
fire department, police force, and postal service; the city provides protection for
diplomats. Tours leave every half hour, 9:15 am to 4:45 pm. |
